South Africa Triumphs in High-Scoring Encounter
Windhoek [Namibia], September 4: In a nail-biting contest, South Africa managed to clinch victory over Namibia by a narrow margin of 11 runs during the sixth match of the Namibia T20I Tri-Series held at the Namibia Cricket Ground on Friday.
This win guarantees South Africa a spot in the final, where they will face Zimbabwe on Sunday, while Namibia will reflect on a commendable chase that ultimately fell short.
South Africa set a formidable target, scoring 228 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in their allotted 20 overs, driven by an impressive maiden century from Lhuan-dre Pretorius and a strong performance from Connor Esterhuizen.
Pretorius was the standout performer, smashing 101 runs off just 53 balls, which included five fours and eight sixes. Esterhuizen supported him well, contributing 88 runs from 40 balls, featuring six fours and eight sixes.
The duo formed a formidable opening partnership, amassing 156 runs before Esterhuizen was dismissed by Jan Balt. Pretorius continued his aggressive batting, reaching his century in the final over before being caught by Gerhard Erasmus.
Rubin Hermann added a quick 26 runs off 21 balls, helping South Africa finish their innings at 228/4, achieving a run rate of 11.40.
For Namibia, Jan Balt was the standout bowler, taking 2 wickets for 31 runs in his four overs. Ruben Trumpelmann also contributed with a wicket, ending with figures of 1/38, while Gerhard Erasmus recorded 1/28.
In response, Namibia started strong with Jan Frylinck and Louren Steenkamp forming a solid opening partnership of 119 runs in under 11 overs. Frylinck scored 72 runs off 36 balls, while Steenkamp added 61 runs from 44 deliveries.
However, the chase lost steam after Frylinck's dismissal, and Steenkamp had to retire hurt after sustaining an injury to his forearm.
Captain Gerhard Erasmus managed to score 30 runs off 26 balls, while Ruben Trumpelmann provided some late fireworks with a quick 21 runs off 10 balls.
Namibia concluded their innings at 217/3, falling just 11 runs short of the target.
Nqobani Mokoena was the key bowler for South Africa at the end, taking 2 wickets for 43 runs in his four overs, including the vital final wicket of Trumpelmann. Kwena Maphaka bowled a crucial 19th over, conceding only 13 runs, which helped South Africa secure the win.
