South Africa Levels Series with New Zealand
Wellington [New Zealand], March 22: In an exciting fourth T20I match at Sky Stadium, South Africa triumphed over New Zealand by 19 runs, bringing the five-match series to a 2-2 tie.
Choosing to bat first, South Africa's opening pair of Wiaan Mulder and Tony de Zorzi (23 runs off 21 balls) faced a challenging start. Mulder was dismissed without scoring in the very first over bowled by Kyle Jamieson.
Connor Esterhuizen stepped in at number three and formed a solid partnership, adding 81 runs with de Zorzi for the second wicket. Esterhuizen showcased his talent by scoring his first half-century, propelling the Proteas to a strong position.
He finished with 57 runs from 36 balls, featuring seven boundaries and three sixes.
Rubin Hermann and Dian Forrester (19 runs off 14 balls) contributed 38 runs for the fourth wicket, while Jason Smith chipped in with 19 runs. George Linde (14*) and Hermann (28 not out off 25 balls) remained at the crease, helping their team set a total of 164/5 in 20 overs.
Jamieson claimed two wickets, with Zakary Foulkes, Ben Sears, and Cole McConchie each taking one wicket.
In response, New Zealand began their chase with Tim Robinson and debutant Katene Clarke. Clarke managed to hit a couple of boundaries before being dismissed by Mulder, scoring nine runs off five balls.
Robinson (32 runs off 22 balls) formed a brief partnership of 24 runs with Dane Cleaver (26 runs off 16 balls), but the Proteas consistently took wickets, preventing the Blackcaps from establishing significant partnerships.
McConchie struck a few boundaries, but Keshav Maharaj's bowling led to his dismissal, further complicating New Zealand's chase.
Gerald Coetzee claimed the final wicket of Jamieson, leaving New Zealand at 145 all out. Coetzee finished with three wickets, while Maharaj, Ottneil Baartman, and Prenelan Subrayen each took two wickets.
Connor Esterhuizen was awarded Player of the Match for his pivotal innings.
The series decider, the fifth T20I, is scheduled to take place at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Wednesday.
