South Africa Triumphs in Second ODI
Johannesburg [South Africa], September 27: South Africa secured a 32-run victory over Australia in the second ODI of their three-match series, thanks to remarkable centuries from David Miller and captain Temba Bavuma, along with a strong bowling performance.
This win marks South Africa's second consecutive victory in the series, bringing their total to 2-0. David Miller was the standout performer, scoring an impressive 142 runs off just 93 balls, featuring 12 fours and nine sixes. His performance showcased that even in his late 30s, he remains a formidable force in the game. This victory also signifies South Africa's sixth consecutive ODI series win against Australia and their tenth win out of 16 series encounters.
With Australia choosing to bowl first, South Africa found themselves in a precarious position at 93/3. However, a brilliant partnership between Bavuma, who scored 103 runs off 116 balls, and Miller, who contributed significantly, resulted in a remarkable 156-run stand for the fourth wicket, allowing the Proteas to post a total of 365/9.
Miller's performance against Australia has been exceptional; in 28 ODI innings, he has amassed 1,184 runs at an average of 59.2, including four centuries and six fifties. This match marked his 31st fifty-plus score batting at five or lower, surpassing the previous record held by Jonty Rhodes.
Additionally, Miller's eight ODI centuries now tie him with England's Jos Buttler for the most centuries scored while batting at five or below, surpassing Indian legends Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni, who each have seven.
This was also Miller's fourth ODI century against Australia, with only Faf du Plessis having more, with five centuries in 21 innings.
Bavuma's century was his fifth as captain, equaling Faf du Plessis, but he still trails behind AB de Villiers, who holds the record with 13 centuries as a Proteas captain.
On the bowling front, an Australian pace-bowling all-rounder achieved figures of 5/67, becoming the second Australian, after Nathan Bracken, to take an ODI five-wicket haul against South Africa on home soil.
During Australia's chase, Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head both scored 84 runs, contributing to a solid 130-run opening partnership. However, the Australian innings faltered as they fell to 251/6. Despite efforts from Jack Edwards and Xavier Bartlett, who scored 25 and 50 runs respectively, Australia was ultimately bowled out for 333 in 49.5 overs, conceding the series to South Africa.
Lizaad Williams, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, and Bjorn Fortuin were the standout bowlers for South Africa, with Williams taking 3 wickets for 54 runs. Miller's explosive innings earned him the 'Player of the Match' award.
