South Africa Achieves Historic 2-0 Test Series Victory Over India
South Africa's Dominance in Guwahati
In a stunning display of cricket, South Africa triumphed over India by a staggering 408 runs in the second and final Test held at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday. This victory not only secured a 2-0 series win for the Temba Bavuma-led team but also marked their first Test series victory in India in 25 years.
This defeat represents India's second home whitewash under the guidance of head coach Gautam Gambhir, and it is the third time the team has faced such a fate in Test cricket.
Historically, India has experienced three home whitewashes in Test matches. The first was in 2000 when South Africa became the inaugural team to achieve this feat, winning the series 2-0. More recently, New Zealand completed a clean sweep with a 3-0 victory last year.
Throughout the series, Indian batsmen struggled significantly against a formidable South African bowling lineup, averaging a mere 15.23 runs across the two matches. This statistic marks the second-lowest average for India in any Test series, following their 12.42 average against New Zealand in 2002/03.
Compounding their difficulties, the Indian team failed to register a single century in both Tests against South Africa. This occurrence is only the third of its kind in home Test series for India, following similar instances in 1969/70 and 1995/96.
Washington Sundar emerged as India's top scorer with 124 runs at an average of 31.00, while Ravindra Jadeja followed closely with 105 runs.
Prominent players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal (83), KL Rahul (68), and Rishabh Pant (49) had disappointing performances throughout the series.
Following their comprehensive victory, South Africa completed a 2-0 whitewash against India in the two-match Test series.
Marco Jansen was awarded Player of the Match for his outstanding all-round performance, while Simon Harmer received the Player of the Series accolade.
This series win marks South Africa's first Test series victory in India since 2000, when they last achieved this under the captaincy of Hansie Cronje. Additionally, this victory represents South Africa's second-largest win margin by runs, trailing only their 492-run victory against Australia in Johannesburg in 2018.
Brief Scores: India: 201 and 140 (Yashasvi Jaiswal 58, Ravindra Jadeja 54, Simon Harmer 6/37) against South Africa: 489 and 260/5d (Tristan Stubbs 94, Senuran Muthuswamy 109, Ravindra Jadeja 4/62).
