Sourav Ganguly Speaks Out on Threats
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 14: Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, has recently spoken out regarding the death threats directed at him and his family over the past six months. He expressed his trust in law enforcement to handle the situation effectively.
During the opening of a new store at Acropolis Mall in Kolkata, Ganguly confirmed that he had reported the threats to the police. He stated, “We have informed the police about the situation. I am confident they will address it. The calls are local to Kolkata, and I hope the authorities will take appropriate action. I have security measures in place,” he told the media.
A formal complaint was filed at the Thakurpukur Police Station in Kolkata recently.
The police report indicates that Ganguly and his family have been receiving threatening letters for approximately six months. The situation escalated earlier this week when two letters reportedly contained alarming phrases like “eliminate” and “finish.”
Initially, the family dismissed the messages as the work of overly enthusiastic fans, but the persistent threats and aggressive tone led them to seek police intervention.
Ganguly, a revered figure in Indian cricket, was honored with induction into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame last month for his significant contributions to the sport.
Throughout his career, he played 113 Test matches and 311 ODIs, amassing a total of 18,575 runs across all formats. His Test record includes 7,212 runs at an average of 42.17, featuring 16 centuries and 35 half-centuries, while his ODI performance boasts 11,363 runs at an average of 41.02, with 22 centuries and 72 half-centuries.
As captain, Ganguly was instrumental in developing a formidable Indian team in the early 2000s, leading them to the 2003 ODI World Cup final and achieving a historic Test series win in Pakistan in 2004.
His international career is also remembered for his iconic shirt-waving moment at Lord's after India's victory over England in the 2002 NatWest Trophy final.
Having last played international cricket in 2008, Ganguly continued to participate in the IPL until 2012 before retiring from domestic cricket. He currently holds the position of President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).
