Soorma Hockey Club Aims for Success in Upcoming Hockey India League
Soorma Hockey Club Sets Sights on Improvement
Following a strong performance in the previous Hockey India League (HIL), Soorma Hockey Club is determined to achieve an even better outcome in the forthcoming season.
The team secured the second position during the league phase but faced defeat in the semifinals. However, they bounced back to clinch third place, ensuring a spot on the podium.
Striker Gurjant Singh expressed optimism about the team's growth, stating, "We had a fantastic run last season, but we could have capitalized on more scoring opportunities in the semifinals. The upcoming season looks promising. We have retained most of our squad with a few minor adjustments. Last year was our first time playing together as a cohesive unit, and we were pleased with our performance. This year, we aim to improve further."
The men's HIL is scheduled to commence on January 3, with matches taking place in Chennai, Ranchi, and Bhubaneswar. Gurjant emphasized the importance of expanding the league's reach to various regions, particularly those represented by the teams. Last season, the club participated in a pre-tournament training camp in Chandigarh and Panchkula before heading to Rourkela for the tournament.
"The revival of the HIL is a significant opportunity for young hockey players. We have been inspired by our seniors, and young players have similar expectations. I believe the tournament should be extended to different states represented by the teams, allowing them to showcase their skills in front of local fans," he remarked.
"With numerous national and international players participating in this HIL, it promises to be an exciting spectacle for hockey enthusiasts and a chance for players to shine in front of their home crowd. Last year’s matches were held in Rourkela, and this time, the tournament has expanded to three cities," he added.
Recently, Soorma Hockey Club unveiled their new jersey in Chennai and hosted hockey clinics led by renowned players Rani Rampal and Sardar Singh. Gurjant noted, "Hockey has undergone significant changes in recent years, and the introduction of HIL has contributed to its growing popularity. A strong club culture is essential for elevating the sport and attracting young talent. Working as a cohesive unit with the support of international players under a new coach is an invaluable experience. Our club is committed to nurturing young talent, and we witnessed many of them making an impact last season."
Philippe Goldberg, the club's head coach, echoed Gurjant's sentiments, stating, "The team's success is my top priority. We have a wealth of talent and big names. Our focus is on building a strong team dynamic, both on and off the field. If we achieve that, the results and enjoyment of the game will naturally follow, inspiring young players across India through our style of play."
