Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], March 14: Snigdha Kanta from Karnataka concluded a remarkable week by securing the girls' singles championship at the ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors J60 event in Gurugram, which took place from March 9 to 14. She triumphed over fellow Karnataka player Padmapriya Ramesh Kumar with a score of 6-4, 6-4 in the final held on Saturday.
As the second seed, the 16-year-old showcased a poised performance during the title match, successfully converting key break points in both sets to achieve a straight-sets victory, marking one of the significant milestones in her junior career.
Throughout the tournament, Snigdha demonstrated consistent skill, navigating through a challenging international field. After dominating the initial rounds, she elevated her game in the semifinals, overcoming fifth seed Deepshika Vinayagamurthy with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, setting the stage for an all-Karnataka final.
This win contributes valuable points to Snigdha's ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors campaign, where she recently reached a career-high ranking of No. 448. Her performance on the domestic circuit has also been impressive, highlighted by her victory at the ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors J30 in Raipur earlier this March, along with several commendable finishes in national competitions.
Padmapriya Ramesh Kumar, the runner-up, also had a noteworthy tournament in Gurugram. The 13-year-old advanced to the final without losing a set, including a strong semifinal performance where she defeated top seed Prisha Nikhil Shinde 6-4, 6-1. Despite her loss in the final, Padmapriya's performance underscored her rapid ascent in the junior tennis circuit.
Padmapriya has already made a name for herself as one of India's promising young talents. She has held the position of India’s No. 1 in the AITA Girls' Under-14 rankings for several weeks and has also entered the Top 100 of the national Under-16 rankings. The Mysuru-based player has claimed multiple titles on the AITA national circuit and achieved a podium finish at the ATF Asian 14 & Under Grade A tournament, showcasing her potential on the international stage.
Commenting on their achievements, Sunil Yajaman, Hon. Joint Secretary of the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA), expressed, “Congratulations to Snigdha for her well-earned title and to Padmapriya for her impressive journey to the final. An all-Karnataka final at an international ITF junior event is a promising indicator of tennis growth in our state.
