Raipur, Oct 15: On Friday, a significant milestone in Indian women's cricket will unfold as Smriti Mandhana takes the helm as the full-time captain for the inaugural T20I against Zimbabwe, who are yet to secure a victory in this format this year.
This match will kick off Zimbabwe's first bilateral series against India, with the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium hosting its first women's international encounter.
Smriti, who has served as vice-captain for nearly a decade, steps into this leadership role following Harmanpreet Kaur's tenure. She leads a confident squad fresh off victories in the Asia Cup and the Asian Games gold medal. Having previously captained Maharashtra in domestic cricket and led Royal Challengers Bengaluru to two WPL titles, she is no stranger to leadership.
In her captaincy experience, Smriti has led India in 18 T20Is, achieving 11 wins and 6 losses, with her first match as captain occurring seven years ago against England in Guwahati due to Harmanpreet's injury. Her promotion to captaincy coincides with her peak performance, as the left-handed opener has recorded two centuries and 15 fifties in T20Is over the past three years, boasting a career-high strike rate of 148.25 in 2026.
While Harmanpreet remains a vital presence in the team, her release from captaincy duties may allow her to focus more on her batting prowess. A key selection challenge for India is filling the number three position, which is currently vacant due to Jemimah Rodrigues' recovery from a right hamstring injury.
G Kamalini has batted in that position twice, but Anushka Sharma and Niki Prasad have made strong cases for selection after impressive performances against Australia A. Prema Rawat may also be included, as Shreyanka Patil is not part of the series. India will look to vice-captain Shafali Verma and left-arm spinner N Sree Charani to maintain their excellent form.
Zimbabwe, under the leadership of Josephine Nkomo, has faced defeats in all their T20Is this year, with their last victory in this format occurring against Namibia in September 2025. However, they will draw confidence from their first ODI win over the West Indies at home in September. Kelis Ndhlovu, the only Zimbabwean to score a T20I fifty this year, will be a crucial player for them.
The three T20Is will be followed by three ODIs in Vadodara from October 23 to 28.
