Smriti Mandhana Sets New Record as Leading Run-Scorer in Women's T20I Cricket
Mandhana Achieves Historic Milestone
Aichi-Nagoya, Japan - On September 20, ICC chairman Jay Shah extended his congratulations to Indian cricketer Smriti Mandhana for becoming the top run-scorer in women's T20 International cricket during the Asian Games 2026 semifinal against Bangladesh.
In a post shared on X, Shah commended Mandhana's remarkable achievement, highlighting her role in elevating women's cricket and serving as a source of inspiration for aspiring athletes.
“Congratulations to @mandhana_smriti for leading the Women’s T20I run charts with 4,788 runs. By making history, you are raising the profile of women’s cricket and setting a benchmark for young dreamers everywhere. Here’s to many more achievements ahead!” Shah expressed on X.
Mandhana surpassed the previous record held by New Zealand's Suzie Bates, who had 4,758 runs, to claim the top position in the all-time women's T20I run-scoring list. She reached this milestone during the second semifinal against Bangladesh at Korogi Sports Park.
Her innings of 37 runs off just 19 balls, featuring five boundaries and two sixes, contributed significantly to India's strong start alongside Shafali Verma. Together, they amassed 72 runs for the opening wicket before Mandhana was dismissed.
India triumphed over Bangladesh by 114 runs, securing their spot in the gold medal match against Sri Lanka, who advanced after defeating Pakistan by eight wickets in the first semifinal.
Mandhana's accomplishment adds to her stellar international record, bringing her total runs across formats to 10,964. Harmanpreet Kaur ranks third on the women's T20I run charts with 4,287 runs.
Following Mandhana and Bates, the top five includes Sri Lanka's Chamari Athapaththu (4,282 runs) and New Zealand's Sophie Devine (3,817 runs).
Mandhana's record comes as India continues its pursuit of a gold medal at the Asian Games, with the final match against Sri Lanka on the horizon.
