Enhancements at Sinhalese Sports Club for Upcoming T20 World Cup
The Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Colombo is set to undergo significant upgrades, including the installation of floodlights, in anticipation of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. This tournament is scheduled to take place in India and Sri Lanka during February and March of next year, according to reports from a prominent sports news outlet.
Construction of the floodlights is already in progress at the SSC, which will enable Sri Lanka Cricket to host day-night matches, enhancing the viewing experience for fans.
The SSC will kick off its T20 World Cup 2026 journey with a Group B match featuring Oman against Zimbabwe on February 9, necessitating the use of lights. In total, the venue will host five matches during the tournament.
The first match at SSC will be between the Netherlands and Pakistan on February 7, followed by Oman versus Zimbabwe on February 9, and Pakistan taking on the USA on February 10. Additionally, Pallekele will serve as the venue for all seven matches of the tournament.
The 10th edition of the T20 World Cup is set to commence on February 7, 2026, featuring a 20-team format that will run until March 8. The opening day will see six teams, including the defending champions India, in action, as detailed on the official International Cricket Council (ICC) website.
India will face the USA in Mumbai, with the tournament co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka across eight venues, including five in India and three in Sri Lanka.
The complete list of host venues includes the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Eden Gardens in Kolkata, R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sinhalese Sports Club Cricket Ground in Colombo, and Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy.
From February 7 to 20, a total of 40 group matches will be played, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the Super Eights phase starting on February 21.
The leading four teams after the Super Eights will qualify for the knockout rounds, with semi-finals scheduled in Kolkata/Colombo and Mumbai, culminating in the final on March 8 in Ahmedabad/Colombo.
In Group A, India will compete against the USA and their long-time rival Pakistan, with their match set for February 15 in Colombo. The Netherlands and Namibia complete the group.
Sri Lanka is placed in Group B alongside the 2021 champions Australia, Ireland, Zimbabwe, and Oman.
Group C features two-time champions England and the West Indies, along with newcomers Italy and Asian teams Bangladesh and Nepal. Group D includes New Zealand, South Africa, Afghanistan, Canada, and the UAE.
