Simon Harmer Achieves Historic Ten-Wicket Haul in Series Victory Against Australia
Historic Achievement for Simon Harmer
Cape Town, South Africa - On November 1, spinner Simon Harmer etched his name in the record books during the Proteas' 2-1 series triumph over Australia. He became the second South African spinner and the first since the nation's return to international cricket to secure a ten-wicket haul on home soil.
Harmer's exceptional performance was pivotal in clinching the series for South Africa. As Australia aimed to chase down 288 runs, Harmer's bowling prowess shone through, as he recorded remarkable figures of 6/16 in the second innings, leading to Australia being bowled out for a mere 111 runs. Earlier, he had also taken 4/104 in the first innings.
The last South African spinner to achieve a ten-wicket haul at home was Hugh Tayfield, who accomplished this feat against England in 1957 in Johannesburg, with match figures of 4/79 and 9/113.
Notably, Harmer is the first South African spinner to achieve a ten-wicket haul in Cape Town.
In his 17 Test matches for the Proteas, Harmer has claimed 83 wickets at an impressive average of 23.07, including eight four-wicket hauls, three five-wicket hauls, and one ten-wicket haul, with his best innings and match figures recorded in this match.
This year alone, Harmer has taken 14 wickets in three Tests at an average of 29.35, featuring a six-wicket haul and a ten-wicket haul, with his best figures being 6/16.
In the match, the Proteas batted first, scoring 329 runs, bolstered by solid contributions from Aiden Markram (78 runs off 141 balls), Marques Ackerman (95 runs off 94 balls), and Marco Jansen (52 runs off 71 balls). Mitchell Starc's impressive six-wicket haul (6/72) halted the Proteas' momentum, reducing them from 232/4 to all out.
Australia responded with a total of 429 runs, thanks to a century from Josh Inglis (102 runs off 135 balls) and fifties from Matt Renshaw (74 runs), Cameron Green (65 runs), and Alex Carey (80 runs).
In their second innings, the Proteas found themselves at 181/5, but centuries from Ryan Rickelton (101 runs off 219 balls) and Wiaan Mulder (115 runs off 221 balls) propelled them to 387 all out, setting Australia a target of 288 runs.
The Proteas faced early trouble in their run chase, with Kagiso Rabada (3/39) making early inroads before Harmer dismantled the rest of the batting order. Nathan Lyon was the top scorer for Australia with 33 runs as they were bowled out for just 111 runs.
