Shukri Conrad Highlights Success of SA20 in Developing Young Proteas Talent
SA20's Impact on South African Cricket
Johannesburg [South Africa], March 27: Shukri Conrad, the head coach of the South African men's cricket team, has an extensive background in the sport, having worked at various levels from club and youth cricket to provincial and international stages.
At 58 years old, Conrad's insights into the SA20 league are grounded in experience rather than mere national pride. He stated, “SA20 has been an unqualified success for us. You only need to look at the numbers and the calibre of players,” as reported in a recent release.
Under Conrad's guidance, the Proteas recently faced New Zealand, where a youthful squad showcased their skills against the Black Caps, who were the runners-up in the latest ICC T20 World Cup.
The series concluded with a 3-2 victory for South Africa after a decisive match in Christchurch. However, for Conrad, the real achievement lies in the growth of young players who have gained valuable experience in the SA20 over the last four seasons.
Transitioning from domestic to international cricket is notoriously challenging, often hindering the progress of promising talents. Yet, as Conrad notes, leagues like SA20 are changing this narrative.
“It’s becoming a global trend for nations to establish a 'souped-up T20 league',” he remarked before the fifth T20I in Christchurch. “This league helps bridge the gap between domestic and international cricket. The influx of overseas players brings invaluable experience that our younger players can learn from, preparing them for the pressures of international matches.”
Young talents such as Connor Esterhuizen from Pretoria Capitals, Prenelan Subrayen from Joburg Super Kings, and Nqobani Mokoena from Paarl Royals have all made their international debuts during this tour of New Zealand.
Conrad emphasized that while these players have become well-known in SA20, the transition to international cricket presents new challenges and scrutiny. “It’s been an invaluable experience to see players like Esterhuizen and Mokoena rise to the occasion, along with Subrayen making his debut and performing well,” he concluded.
