Shubman Gill's Return and Recent Exclusion

After a lengthy absence, Shubman Gill made his comeback to the Asia Cup T20I squad last year, stepping in as the vice-captain. However, his performance led to his removal from the team, as he struggled to score a half-century in 15 innings, resulting in his exclusion from the T20 World Cup earlier this year. Despite this setback, Gill has excelled in the IPL, amassing 732 runs in 16 innings, making him the second-highest scorer of the season. His absence from the T20I selections for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England has raised eyebrows, especially with Shreyas Iyer returning to lead the team. Former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin has voiced his concerns regarding Gill's omission.

Azharuddin's Take on Gill's Exclusion

"Gill has been managing the captaincy role exceptionally well, and his individual performance has significantly improved. He is undoubtedly one of the top players, and I fail to understand why he isn't being selected for T20 matches," Azharuddin remarked during an interview. He emphasized that Gill is a valuable asset across all formats and should not have been dropped from any of them. In his T20I career, Gill has scored 869 runs at an impressive strike rate of 138.59 over 36 matches. Azharuddin also pointed out the selectors' decision to overlook local talents like Sarfaraz Khan and Auqib Nabi, expressing disappointment over Nabi's exclusion despite his remarkable domestic performance, which includes 44 wickets in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season and 60 in 2025-26. "These players have consistently excelled in domestic cricket, yet their efforts go unrecognized, which is disheartening," he added.
