In Guwahati, Assam, the cricket world was buzzing as Indian captain Shubman Gill achieved an extraordinary unbeaten double century during the second ODI against the West Indies on Wednesday. His remarkable performance, alongside Rohit Sharma, who also scored a century, propelled India to their highest-ever ODI chase, successfully chasing down 406 runs.
The opening partnership of 255 runs between Gill and Sharma was pivotal, with Gill finishing with an impressive 223 runs off 133 balls, overshadowing Rohit's century. Fans were thrilled to see both players in action, but it was Gill's explosive innings that stole the spotlight.

Priyank Panchal, a former domestic cricket stalwart, expressed his belief that Gill has the potential to become a legendary figure in 50-over cricket, noting his significant impact in a relatively short career.
Shikhar Dhawan, who once opened alongside Gill, congratulated him on Instagram, stating, "A double hundred at that pace. Fastest ODI double century ever! That's not form, that's a statement."
Gill's innings included 26 fours and eight sixes, achieving a strike rate of over 167, making it the third-highest ODI score ever, trailing only Rohit Sharma's 264 and Martin Guptill's 237*. He surpassed Ishan Kishan's previous record for the fastest double century, which was achieved in 126 balls against Bangladesh in 2022.
This achievement also positioned Gill as the second player, alongside Rohit Sharma, to have multiple double centuries in ODIs. Notably, he became the first player to score a double century while captaining the side, having previously scored 269 against England.
Gill's score also eclipsed Virender Sehwag's 219, marking the highest ODI score by an Indian captain. He reached his century in just 62 balls, breaking Rohit's record for the fastest century by an Indian skipper.
Despite the impressive chase, the West Indies had set a formidable target, with John Campbell, Shai Hope, and Amir Jangoo all scoring centuries, leading their team to a total of 405/7. India, however, responded with a stellar performance, ultimately winning by eight wickets.
