Concerns Over Shubman Gill's Participation

In New Delhi, the Indian selectors are expected to soon reveal the T20 squad for the upcoming five-match series against South Africa, but there are concerns regarding the availability of Shubman Gill, who serves as the T20I vice-captain.

The T20I matches are set to commence on December 9 in Cuttack, following the conclusion of the ODI series on December 6. The series will continue with matches in New Chandigarh on December 11, Dharamsala on December 14, Lucknow on December 17, and Ahmedabad on December 19.

Gill sustained a neck injury while batting during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata, which led to him retiring hurt. He missed the second Test, which India lost, and is also absent from the ongoing three-match ODI series. Currently, he is undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, leaving his participation in the T20I series uncertain.

In light of Gill's probable absence, Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal are strong candidates to open the batting alongside Abhishek Sharma. Samson recently joined the T20I squad for a tour in Australia, although he only played two matches, batting once at No. 3. Jaiswal, who was not part of that squad, has been in excellent form, making him a compelling option, according to ESPNcricinfo.

ESPNcricinfo also reports that selectors may consider Riyan Parag for a position in the 15-member squad. Parag last represented India in a T20I series against Bangladesh in 2024 and is currently captaining Assam in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Additionally, Hardik Pandya, India's prominent all-rounder, is anticipated to return for the T20I series against South Africa. After an injury during the Asia Cup earlier this year, Pandya made a remarkable return to competitive cricket, scoring an impressive 77 runs off 42 balls, leading Baroda to a thrilling seven-wicket victory over Punjab in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Hyderabad. His innings featured seven fours and four sixes, highlighting his explosive batting capabilities. He also contributed with the ball, taking one wicket in his four-over spell, although he conceded 52 runs.
