Shubman Gill Undergoes Fitness Assessment Ahead of South Africa T20I Series
Shubman Gill's Fitness Check at Bengaluru's Centre of Excellence
Shubman Gill, the vice-captain of India's T20I team, is set to arrive at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on Monday for essential fitness evaluations. These assessments are crucial for determining his readiness to participate in the upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa, which kicks off on December 9.
Gill has been sidelined due to a neck injury he sustained while batting during the second day of the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata. Consequently, he missed the second Test and the ongoing ODI series.
The Indian T20I squad is expected to remain unchanged unless any injury issues arise. The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is awaiting Gill's fitness report from the Sports Science team at the Centre of Excellence.
After receiving an injection, Gill was prescribed a 21-day rest and rehabilitation period, which included targeted exercises to strengthen the affected muscles. The sports science team will conduct all necessary fitness tests before he resumes skills training.
A source from the BCCI, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, "We cannot make any conclusions until the sports science team evaluates his movements during skills training and confirms he experiences no discomfort while batting." Currently, Gill's chances of returning for the T20I series against South Africa are estimated to be around 50-50.
Hardik Pandya Cleared to Return to T20 Action
In a positive development for Indian cricket fans, Hardik Pandya has received clearance to return to T20 cricket. He is scheduled to play his first match in over two and a half months against Punjab in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Hyderabad on Tuesday.
Pandya is also expected to participate in the match on December 4 against Baroda, with national selector Pragyan Ojha present at both games to assess his overall fitness before the squad announcement.
A source familiar with the situation revealed, "From October 21 to November 30, Hardik remained at the Centre of Excellence, completing his rehabilitation and 'Return To Play' protocols. He has now been cleared to bat and bowl in T20Is and has joined the Baroda team for the Punjab match. If the Indian team management does not call him up earlier, he intends to play against Haryana on December 6 as well."
