Shubman Gill's New Role as Test Captain

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], May 25: As Shubman Gill steps into the role of captain for India's Test team ahead of the eagerly awaited series against England, former cricketer Yograj Singh has acknowledged the significant influence of Gill's father and cricket legend Yuvraj Singh on his journey.

In a conversation with a News Media outlet, Yograj Singh highlighted the importance of robust mentorship and familial backing in shaping Gill's career trajectory.

"The success of Shubman Gill can be attributed to his father and Yuvraj Singh," he remarked.

He further noted, "If Shubman Gill has ascended to captaincy today and is likely to maintain this position for an extended period, Yuvraj Singh's mentorship has been and will continue to be crucial in that regard."

Yograj, a former international player and Yuvraj's father, emphasized how Yuvraj's cricketing acumen has been instrumental in Gill's development as both a player and a leader.

"Having someone like Yuvraj Singh, recognized as one of the greatest cricketing minds globally, mentoring Gill is a significant advantage," he stated.

Gill, who has showcased his skills across various formats with remarkable poise and technique, now bears the responsibility of leading India in the longest format of the game. With the backing of mentors like Yuvraj and the foundation established by his father, expectations are soaring for the 25-year-old as he embarks on this new phase of his career.

He has emerged as one of the youngest players to assume this role in recent times. Although he lacks extensive captaincy experience in Test cricket, he previously led India during a five-match T20I series in Zimbabwe in 2024. Additionally, Gill has been at the helm of the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Gill has also held the position of vice-captain in ODIs and T20Is, serving as Rohit Sharma's deputy during India's triumphant Champions Trophy campaign in the UAE in February 2025. In his Test career, Gill has participated in 32 matches, amassing 1,893 runs, which includes five centuries.

India's Test squad for the England series includes: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.
