Shubman Gill Sets New IPL Record with 600 Runs in a Season
Shubman Gill Achieves Historic Milestone
On May 21, during the final league match of the season at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Shubman Gill made headlines by surpassing Virat Kohli's long-standing record, amassing 600 runs in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). The 26-year-old accomplished this feat for the third time in his career and the second while captaining a team. He contributed significantly with a brisk 64 runs off just 37 balls, forming a solid 125-run opening partnership with Sai Sudharsan.
Shubman Gill's Historic Achievement
Gill has now become the fourth captain in IPL history to achieve the milestone of over 600 runs in multiple seasons. He previously reached this mark in the 2025 season, where he scored 650 runs. This latest achievement marks the third time he has crossed the 600-run threshold, following his impressive 890-run season in 2023, which ranks as the second-highest total in a single season. At just 27, he is the first player to have multiple 600+ run seasons as a captain, a feat only previously accomplished once by Virat Kohli in 2013. Kohli was also the youngest to achieve this milestone, reaching it for the second time in 2016 at the age of 27.
David Warner stands as the only other player to have scored 600 or more runs in consecutive seasons while leading his team.
Captains with Multiple 600+ Run Seasons in IPL History
| Player | 600+ Seasons As Captain | Years | Age |
| KL Rahul | 3 | 2020, 2021, 2022 | 28,29,30 |
| Virat Kohli | 2 | 2013,2016 | 24,27 |
| David Warner | 2 | 2016,2017 | 29,30 |
| KL Rahul | 2 | 2025,2026 | 25,26 |
Additionally, Gill is the first player to achieve three 600+ run seasons before turning 27, surpassing KL Rahul, who previously held the record at age 29 in 2021. Rahul also set the record for being the youngest captain to achieve back-to-back 600+ run seasons, a record that Gill has now broken.
With this achievement, Gill joins the ranks of players with the most 600+ run seasons (3), alongside Warner and Chris Gayle, while only KL Rahul (4) and Virat Kohli (5) have more.
