Shubman Gill Set for First Test Against Sri Lanka After Strong Warm-Up Performance
Gill's Readiness for the Test Series
Colombo, August 9 – Indian spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule has confirmed that captain Shubman Gill is fully prepared for the upcoming first Test against Sri Lanka. Gill had missed the initial two days of the warm-up match due to a finger injury sustained during practice.
He returned to the field on the final day of the warm-up game, impressively scoring 44 runs off 54 balls, which set the stage for India's successful chase of 207 runs, boosting their confidence ahead of the two-match Test series commencing on August 15 in Galle.
Bahutule explained that Gill's absence was merely a precautionary measure, stating, "It was just a precaution more than anything else. He has been absolutely fine and has continued his training. The management decided to keep him out of the first day of the practice match, and his performance in the second innings was flawless. He is very much ready for the Test match," as reported by a sports news outlet.
Warm-Up Match Highlights
In the warm-up match, Sri Lanka XI won the toss and opted to bat first, declaring their innings at 363/8. Key contributions came from Ravindu Rasantha (71 runs), Nishan Fernando (66 runs), and skipper Sonal Dinusha (52 runs).
For India, the bowling attack was led by Manav Suthar (2/33), Ravindra Jadeja (2/64), and Kuldeep Yadav (2/76). Aqib Nabi, who replaced the injured Jasprit Bumrah, did not bowl, while Saransh Jain, making his debut, bowled without taking a wicket.
India's response saw them lose Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck, but a solid 96-run partnership between KL Rahul (40 runs) and Devdutt Padikkal helped stabilize the innings. Jadeja contributed with 63 runs before retiring hurt. Padikkal shone with an unbeaten 142 runs, leading India to a declaration at 357/6, just six runs behind Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka's Second Innings and India's Chase
In their second innings, Sri Lanka XI declared at 200/6, with notable performances from Nishan Fernando (63 runs) and Nipun Dhananjaya (46 runs). Jadeja and Gurnoor Brar each took two wickets for India, while Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna also claimed a wicket each.
Chasing 207 runs, Jaiswal scored 61 runs before retiring hurt, forming a 105-run partnership with Gill, who made a successful return with 44 runs. Contributions from Rishabh Pant (28 runs) and Jadeja (22 runs) were crucial, and in the end, India reached 214/4 in 45 overs, with Mohammed Siraj finishing on 32 not out.
