Currently, Gill is at the helm of the Indian team in a five-match ODI series against New Zealand, where India is leading 2-0. The next match is set to take place at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Tuesday.
Despite a challenging second ODI where Gill was dismissed for a golden duck, India managed to clinch a narrow four-run victory using the DLS method after rain disrupted the game in Wellington.
India opted to bowl first, successfully dismissing New Zealand for just 134 runs in 41 overs. Pacer Gurnoor Brar played a pivotal role, taking out captain Mitchell Santner and quickly following up with the dismissals of Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips, ultimately achieving a four-wicket haul.
While chasing a target of 135, India faced early challenges, losing key players including Gill, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Axar Patel, leaving them at 47/4. Shreyas Iyer (30) and KL Rahul (26 not out) tried to stabilize the innings, but Jacob Duffy and Kyle Jamieson each took three wickets. Rain interrupted play when India was at 113/7, just four runs ahead of the DLS par score, securing their 2-0 lead in the series.
Prior to the ODIs, India had triumphed over New Zealand in a five-match T20I series with a score of 3-2. Following the ODIs, India will engage in a two-match Test series against the hosts.
