For the 26-year-old cricketer, 2025 was a year of contrasts. While he faced challenges in the T20 format, where he was dropped from the national team after a series of disappointing performances, he excelled in Test cricket. His exclusion from the T20I World Cup squad marked a significant turning point in his career, as he managed only 291 runs in 15 innings, averaging just over 24.
In stark contrast, Gill's performance in Test matches was exceptional. He had a remarkable year, particularly during the England tour, where he showcased one of the most impressive batting displays by an Indian player in overseas conditions.
He scored an impressive 754 runs in five Test matches at an average of 75.40, including four centuries and a career-best score of 269. His achievements during this series could easily fill a chapter in any cricket history book.
Overall, Gill accumulated 983 runs in nine Test matches at an average of 70.21, with five centuries and one fifty. In ODIs, he scored 490 runs across 11 matches at an average of 49.00, featuring two centuries and two fifties. However, his T20I struggles continued, with only 291 runs in 15 innings.
His elevation to captaincy in both Tests and ODIs added to the significance of the year. He successfully led India to a hard-fought 2-2 draw in England, marking one of the most thrilling Test series in recent memory.
As he embarks on 2026, Gill has started the year on a strong note in ODIs, delivering impressive performances in bilateral series and contributing to India's ICC Champions Trophy victory, including a century against Bangladesh.
Gill's reflections reveal a player who understands the ups and downs of professional sports and is determined to apply the lessons learned from a challenging yet rewarding year.
