Shocking Selection Decisions for T20 World Cup

The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, has made a surprising decision by excluding Shubman Gill from the squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Gill, who served as the vice-captain of the T20I team, was anticipated to make his debut in the tournament. However, the selectors opted to keep Sanju Samson, who has been chosen as an opener. Gill's omission follows a series of disappointing performances in the T20 format. To fill the gap for a backup opener, Ishan Kishan has been recalled to the squad after a two-year absence. Consequently, Jitesh Sharma was dropped as the team did not require an additional wicketkeeper. Rinku Singh has also been brought back into the T20I lineup.

Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, India made history by becoming the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title. Following the ICC event, former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh expressed his thoughts on Gill's exclusion during an interview with Sports Tak. He emphasized Gill's consistent performance across all formats, stating that it was a difficult decision to leave him out. Yuvraj remarked, "Performing consistently in all three formats is challenging, especially while also being a captain. Virat Kohli is the only player from the recent generation who has managed to excel in all formats and lead successfully. We also had Rohit Sharma in the mix. However, if a player has been part of the T20I setup throughout the year and is dropped at the last minute due to performance issues, that’s a tough call to make."

Axar Patel took over the vice-captaincy from Yuvraj and supported Suryakumar Yadav during the ICC tournament. Samson, who stepped in for Gill at the top of the order, initially did not play in the early matches. His consistent performance came after Rinku was dropped from the team. The right-handed batsman proved to be crucial in key moments, scoring an unbeaten 97 in the virtual quarter-final against West Indies, helping India chase down a target of 196. He also scored 89 runs off just 42 balls in the semi-final against England, leading India to a narrow seven-run victory.

Samson maintained his excellent form, scoring 89 runs off 46 balls in the final against New Zealand. India set a formidable total of 255 runs and secured a 96-run victory, claiming the trophy for the third time.
