Shubman Gill Confident in India's ODI Prospects Against New Zealand
India's ODI Transition and Upcoming Series
Auckland [New Zealand], November 3: As India navigates a transitional phase in its ODI lineup, captain Shubman Gill has voiced his belief in the team's capability to triumph over any opponent. He emphasized that any Indian squad stepping onto the field possesses the talent necessary to compete and secure victories.
Gill sees the forthcoming ODI series against New Zealand, commencing on November 4, as a crucial chance for the team to evaluate its depth and bolster confidence ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
He pointed out that a strong performance in New Zealand would significantly boost morale, especially for younger players eager to make their mark in the national team.
Speaking to reporters before the first ODI against New Zealand in Auckland, Gill stated, “I believe any Indian team that takes the field is capable of defeating any opposition. The young players will gain a lot of confidence if they perform well here. It will also give us confidence that even if we don’t have the squad we ideally want for the World Cup for any reason, we have a team capable of beating other sides in different conditions. In that sense, winning the series here would be a big confidence booster for us.”
India approaches the series with a mix of seasoned players and emerging talent. The batting lineup features experienced players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, while the bowling unit includes a younger contingent.
Notably, star bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been excluded from the white-ball squad, and all-rounder Hardik Pandya is currently sidelined due to injury. Additionally, Ravindra Jadeja, who participated in the previous ODI series against the West Indies, is also absent from the squad for the New Zealand matches.
The bowling lineup for the series consists of Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Anshul Kamboj, Gurnoor Brar, Auqib Nabi, and Kuldeep Yadav.
Gill underscored the significance of the New Zealand tour in preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup, noting that the playing conditions are likely to mirror those in South Africa.
The 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup is set to occur from October 4 to November 21, 2027, with South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia co-hosting the tournament.
He believes that this experience will aid Indian players in adapting to similar conditions they may face during the World Cup, while also offering exposure to the weather and pitches expected during the tournament.
“The World Cup will certainly be at the back of our minds. These conditions are going to be much more similar to those in South Africa than in some of the other countries where we will be playing. Keeping that in mind, the experience will be valuable for both our batters and bowlers. The weather conditions around this time of the year are also likely to be closer to what we might experience in South Africa, rather than the hotter conditions in December or January. So, I think this tour will provide us with valuable experience that will certainly help us going forward,” he added.
Gill also recognized that competing at various venues would be beneficial for the team, particularly for the young bowling attack. He mentioned that the pitches provide good bounce and present challenges for both batters and bowlers, expressing confidence in India's ability to adapt and perform well.
“I think the more we play at different venues, the more experience we gain. From what I have seen, the pitches have offered good bounce, providing challenges for both batters and bowlers. It will be a good test for both teams. We have a young bowling attack, but we possess all the qualities needed to succeed in these conditions. Hopefully, we can learn from the experience and put up good performances,” he concluded.
