Shubman Gill Addresses Tensions with England Openers Ahead of Fourth Test
Confrontation Before the Fourth Test
As the Indian cricket team prepares for the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford in Manchester, captain Shubman Gill has opened up about the intense exchange he had with England's openers, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. Gill noted that both players arrived at the ground approximately one and a half minutes late, just as seven minutes of play remained. He expressed that while he is "not proud" of the incident, it was not entirely unexpected.
Currently, the series stands at 2-1 in favor of England. During the third day of the Lord's Test, which India lost by a narrow margin of 22 runs, a heated dispute erupted between Gill and the English openers. The Indian captain accused them of wasting time, which led to a situation where they faced fewer balls as the day's play was concluding. The entire Indian team surrounded the batters, attempting to unsettle them.
This altercation seemed to energize both sides, with bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah displaying heightened aggression in their performance. The intensity peaked on the fifth day when England reduced India to 82/7 while chasing a target of 193 runs, with Ben Stokes delivering a remarkable spell and Jofra Archer also making a significant impact.
In a pre-match press conference, Gill clarified, "To set the record straight, the English batsmen were 90 seconds late to the crease with only seven minutes left in play. While many teams might take advantage of such situations, there is a proper way to go about it."
He continued, "If a player is struck by a delivery, it's fair for the physios to attend to them. However, arriving 90 seconds late is not in the spirit of the game."
Gill admitted that while he is not proud of the confrontation, it was a culmination of events leading up to that moment. He emphasized that emotions can run high during competitive matches, especially when players perceive unfairness.
With the series hanging in the balance, India aims to harness their competitive spirit more effectively in both batting and bowling to level the series. The updated squad for the fourth Test includes Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (VC & WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Kuldeep Yadav, and Anshul Kamboj.
