Shreyas Iyer Sets New Record with T20I Captaincy Debut Against Ireland
Historic T20I Captaincy Debut
Shreyas Iyer made his debut as captain in T20 internationals during the first match of the two-game series against Ireland on June 26. The right-handed batsman achieved a remarkable milestone by surpassing a record previously held by Rohit Sharma. Iyer is now recognized as the Indian player with the most T20 matches as captain before his T20I debut, having led in 114 T20 matches across various formats. His captaincy experience includes stints with Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Mumbai.
Rohit Sharma follows in second place, having captained the Mumbai Indians in 80 matches before stepping into the role of India’s T20I captain in 2017. Notably, Rohit has not captained any other T20 team. Virat Kohli ranks third, having led Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 72 matches prior to becoming the full-time T20I captain for India. Interestingly, Kohli did not captain the national team until 2017, despite his ODI captaincy debut in 2013. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant are positioned fourth and fifth, with 42 and 30 matches, respectively.
Shreyas Iyer's Journey in Captaincy
Shreyas Iyer's captaincy career
Iyer began his IPL captaincy journey with Delhi Capitals in 2018, taking over from Gautam Gambhir mid-season. Under his leadership, DC reached the second round for the first time since 2012 in 2019 and made it to their inaugural final in 2020. After a brief hiatus, he returned to captain Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022, leading them to end a decade-long title drought in 2024. The following year, Punjab Kings reached their first final since 2014, although they were defeated by Royal Challengers Bengaluru. His impressive performance in the IPL led to his appointment as the captain of the Indian T20I team, replacing Suryakumar Yadav, who had previously led India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Tilak Varma has been named the new vice-captain for the T20I squad.
