Shreyas Iyer Reflects on India's Performance After T20I Loss to New Zealand
Iyer's Insights on the Defeat
Hamilton [New Zealand], November 1: Following a seven-wicket loss to New Zealand in the fifth and final T20I at Seddon Park, India’s T20I captain Shreyas Iyer expressed that his team could have performed better.
Iyer reflected on the match, noting that the team failed to build on the momentum created during his partnership with Ishan Kishan, as they lost consecutive wickets in the middle overs, which increased pressure on the incoming batsmen.
He stated, "Honestly, it was plausible. We could have done better given the start we had in the middle overs, where Ishan and I built momentum. However, we lost wickets in quick succession, putting pressure on the new batsmen."
The Indian captain mentioned that the pitch presented challenges for the batters, with the ball seaming and occasionally skidding. He highlighted that both he and Tilak Varma fell victim to similar dismissals while trying to navigate the tough conditions.
"It wasn’t an easy wicket, especially with the ball seaming and holding up at times. You might have noticed that both Tilak and I got out in a similar manner. It was challenging, particularly with the hard length. But reaching 194 was reasonable, in my opinion," he added.
Iyer also pointed out areas for improvement in India's bowling and fielding, viewing the match as a learning opportunity from the challenges faced while playing abroad.
"We could have been sharper in our bowling and fielding. We were a bit sloppy. However, it’s a great learning experience. Playing overseas, especially in New Zealand, offers different challenges and grounds. It’s a valuable learning curve," he remarked.
When asked about using the final two matches for experimentation, Iyer mentioned that the first three games helped establish a rhythm, while the last matches were an opportunity to test the team further.
"Absolutely, the first three games helped us find our rhythm. In the last two games, we aimed to experiment and challenge ourselves more. Today was the right opportunity, but unfortunately, we didn’t capitalize on it. Nonetheless, it was a great learning experience," he explained.
Looking forward, Iyer stated that the team would concentrate on upcoming ODI matches before identifying areas for improvement, particularly in fielding.
"Right now, I don’t want to dwell on it too much since we have ODIs coming up. The boys are in good spirits. Playing overseas presents various challenges, and the more we embrace them, the better we become," he noted.
"Today was an opportunity we wanted to seize, but we fell short. We need to brainstorm and work on a few aspects, especially fielding, which is an area that requires improvement," he added.
Iyer also expressed gratitude to the Indian fans in New Zealand for their unwavering support throughout the series.
"The way they turned up in large numbers gave us immense confidence as we stepped onto the field. Their love and support mean a lot, and I hope we continue to receive it in every match," he said.
New Zealand successfully chased down India’s target of 192 runs in 18 overs, winning the final T20I by seven wickets. Tim Seifert scored an impressive 93 off 50 balls, while Glenn Phillips remained not out at 65 off 38 deliveries. Despite the loss, India secured the five-match series 3-2.
