Shreyas Iyer Poised to Take Over T20I Captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav
Leadership Changes in Indian Cricket
Recent developments in Indian cricket have led to significant changes in captaincy across all formats. Following Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test and T20I formats, Suryakumar Yadav was appointed as the captain for the T20I team, while Shubman Gill took charge of the ODI and Test teams. However, new reports suggest that Yadav may soon be replaced, with Shreyas Iyer emerging as a strong candidate for the role.
As per a report, the Indian team management is considering appointing a single captain for both the T20I and ODI teams, which could see Iyer stepping in for Gill in the ODI format. This change positions Iyer as a leading contender to captain India in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2027, set to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
A source close to the situation indicated, "We anticipate some changes with the announcement of the new T20 team. Our aim is to have one player leading both the T20 and ODI squads. The BCCI is keen on nurturing young talent while also providing opportunities for seasoned players. Shreyas has shown remarkable performance over the past few years, despite facing unfortunate injuries." The source further noted Iyer's commendable leadership in the IPL, stating, "He is indeed the top candidate for the white-ball captaincy. Suryakumar Yadav has been a World Cup-winning captain, and his contributions will be acknowledged as well."
Upcoming Changes in T20I Leadership
According to reports from a prominent news outlet, Suryakumar Yadav is expected to step down as the captain of the Indian T20I team following the IPL 2026 season due to concerns over his recent performance. Shreyas Iyer is anticipated to take over as the new captain for the T20I format, marking his return to the playing XI for the first time in over two years.
Iyer is likely to lead the Indian team in a two-match T20I series against Ireland, which will be the team's first engagement after their victory in the T20 World Cup 2026. This series will be succeeded by a five-match T20I series in England.
