Shreyas Iyer Leads India to T20I Series Victory Against Zimbabwe

In Harare, Zimbabwe, on July 27, Indian stand-in coach VVS Laxman praised T20I captain Shreyas Iyer for securing his inaugural T20I series win during the Zimbabwe tour, especially after a challenging beginning. He commended the team's collective effort and their 'winners' mindset' throughout the series.
India achieved a clean sweep, winning the series 3-0 with a 35-run victory on Sunday. Following disappointing losses of 0-2 to Ireland and 0-4 to England in previous T20I series, Shreyas finally celebrated his first T20I win and series victory as captain in Zimbabwe.
In a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Laxman expressed admiration for Iyer's enthusiasm and his ability to lead a new squad, which included debutants Ashok Sharma and Yash Thakur.
"A huge round of applause for the entire team. Our goal was to win the series. I want to especially congratulate Shreyas, who faced a tough start to his captaincy. However, he bounced back with optimism from day one, just before our first match," remarked the former Indian batting star.
"This was a new group of players, with only four or five from the England tour joining us here. Shreyas's confidence played a significant role in this victory, as he encouraged each player," he added.
Laxman also highlighted the team's 'winners' mindset,' noting that during their initial meeting, they questioned their ability to demonstrate this attitude.
"We aimed to showcase a winners' mindset. In our first gathering, we asked ourselves if we could achieve that. Throughout these three matches, you all have succeeded in doing so," Laxman stated.
Iyer acknowledged the team's largely 'flawless' performance, aside from a few dropped catches, and expressed gratitude to Laxman for his inspirational leadership.
"Honestly, we were flawless throughout the series, except for the dropped catches. It was a remarkable effort from everyone, including the support staff. Thank you, VVS sir, for motivating us. Every day on the field, your words resonated with us," Iyer said.
In the match, India chose to bat first, with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi delivering an impressive performance, scoring 81 runs off 49 balls, supported by Rinku Singh's late contribution of 25 runs off 14 balls, leading India to a total of 192/5 in 20 overs. Brad Evans was the standout bowler for Zimbabwe, taking 2 wickets for 41 runs.
During Zimbabwe's chase, they struggled early, finding themselves at 65/4 in just 7.2 overs. Despite a resilient half-century from Ryan Burl, who scored 54 runs off 43 balls, Zimbabwe could only manage 157/7 in their 20 overs, resulting in a 35-run defeat.
