Shreyas Iyer's Challenging Debut as T20I Captain

Shreyas Iyer's inaugural captaincy in T20I cricket was disappointing, as India suffered a clean sweep against a less experienced team in a two-match series. In the first match, India fell short of a target of 183, losing by 34 runs. The second T20I was equally challenging, with India narrowly missing the target of 155, losing by just one run. This defeat places Iyer alongside Rishabh Pant in a regrettable record, as both are the only Indian T20I captains to lose their first two matches. Pant had previously led India in a home series against South Africa, where they lost the initial two games but managed to level the series later. The fifth match of that series was abandoned due to heavy rain in Bengaluru, resulting in a 2-2 draw. Currently, Iyer is the full-time T20I captain and has the chance to improve his record.

Upcoming Challenges for Shreyas Iyer

Iyer's next test will be against England, where the teams are set to compete in five T20Is and three ODIs. He will also play a role in the ODI leadership alongside Shubman Gill. The T20I matches are scheduled for June 1, 4, 7, 9, and 11, while the ODIs will take place on July 14, 16, and 19. Following the England series, India is set to visit Zimbabwe for three T20Is. Although the squad for the Asian Games has been announced, the team for the Zimbabwe series is still pending. Notably, Jasprit Bumrah is expected to return for the ODI series against England and the Asian Games 2023, where India secured a gold medal under Ruturaj Gaikwad's captaincy.
