Shreyas Iyer Faces Tough Start as Indian T20I Captain

Shreyas Iyer has begun his captaincy of the Indian T20I team on a challenging note, remaining winless after several matches. Following a defeat against England in the second T20I, Iyer's record now stands at three losses and one no-result. This marks a significant low for Indian cricket, as the team faces the risk of further defeats in the ongoing series. With a history of success under previous captains, Iyer's leadership is under scrutiny as he attempts to turn the tide in upcoming matches.

Shreyas Iyer's Challenging Captaincy Journey

Shreyas Iyer has made an unfortunate mark in his captaincy career, remaining without a win as the leader of the Indian T20I squad. This came after England triumphed over India in the second T20I of their five-match series at Old Trafford, Manchester, on July 4, winning by six wickets with one over remaining. Following a rainout in the first match at Durham, India now trails 1-0 in the series. Iyer took the helm of the Indian team just last week during a two-match series against Ireland, where the team faced defeats in both encounters, losing by 34 runs and one run in Belfast. This resulted in a surprising 2-0 series loss to the Irish, a team India had never previously lost to in any format.

Shreyas Iyer's Record as Captain

With this latest defeat, Shreyas has become the first Indian captain to finish four T20I matches without a single victory, marking a significant low point in his leadership. Previously, MS Dhoni held the record for the longest wait for a first win, while Rishabh Pant had the longest losing streak before achieving his first victory, excluding rain-affected matches. Below is a summary of results for Indian captains after leading in four T20Is:

Indian Captains' Results After Leading in 4 T20Is (only captains who led in a minimum of four T20Is included)

MS Dhoni 1-1-1-1 NR, T, L, W won tied match in bowlout vs Pakistan in 2007
Virat Kohli 2-2-0-0 L, W,W, L -
Rohit Sharma 4-0-0-0 W,W,W,W -
Rishabh Pant 2-2-0-0 L,L,W,W -

Shubman Gill 3-1-0-0 L,W,W,W -

This situation also marks the first instance since October 2021 that India has lost their first two matches in a series, reminiscent of their performance in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Shreyas has taken over a team that previously won two consecutive T20 World Cups under the leadership of Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav. He was appointed captain after Suryakumar was omitted from the squad. Notably, Shreyas was not part of the victorious 2026 T20 World Cup team and has now assumed the number four batting position previously held by Suryakumar. Under Suryakumar's captaincy, India had a flawless record in bilateral series and triumphed in both multinational T20 tournaments. However, Shreyas's initial assignment has not gone well, and he now faces the challenge of turning the tide in the ongoing series against England, currently trailing 1-0 with three matches remaining. The recent series loss to Ireland marked India's first T20I series defeat since August 2023 against the West Indies. The last time India failed to secure a win in a tournament or series in the T20 format was during a December series against South Africa, which ended in defeat under Shreyas's leadership.
