Harare [Zimbabwe], July 23: Shreyas Iyer, the captain of India's T20I team, expressed his joy after achieving his inaugural victory as skipper. The 'Men in Blue' secured a convincing seven-wicket win over Zimbabwe in the first match of the three-match T20I series held in Harare on Thursday.
Having faced a rocky start to his captaincy, with India losing 2-0 to Ireland and suffering a 4-0 defeat against England, Iyer was eager to turn the tide.
In pursuit of 126 runs, India was propelled by a remarkable 18-ball half-century from 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, completing the chase in just 13.2 overs. Sooryavanshi scored 50 runs off 18 balls before his dismissal, while Shreyas Iyer (28*) and Tilak Varma contributed to the team's success.
Earlier, Iyer opted to bowl first, and India's bowlers effectively limited Zimbabwe to 125/7. Mayank Yadav was the standout performer with figures of 2/18, supported by Prince Yadav's 2/19, as the Indian bowlers maintained pressure on the Zimbabwean batsmen.
Post-match, Iyer commended his team's execution, calling it a memorable moment to secure his first win as captain. He praised Mayank Yadav's bowling and Sooryavanshi's fearless batting, noting the young player's confidence and ability to provide a strong start.
"They were exceptional in their execution. I couldn't be happier to achieve my first win. I anticipated the bounce, and it was indeed present. Mayank provided an outstanding start, not giving them any room. Vaibhav's fearless approach was remarkable; he has immense confidence on the field," Iyer remarked.
Mayank Yadav, who earned the Man of the Match award for his 2/18 in 4 overs, expressed his delight in contributing to India's victory. He highlighted the favorable pitch conditions, including bounce and seam movement, which aided his performance.
"It feels great to contribute to a win. This moment is very special for me. The wicket was excellent, and I enjoyed bowling here for the first time in Zimbabwe. The bounce and seam movement were beneficial, and we started strong from the very first ball," he stated.
In their chase of 126, India got off to a strong start, with Sooryavanshi's explosive half-century setting the tone. His aggressive innings of 50, along with contributions from Shreyas Iyer (28*) and Ishan Kishan (35), enabled India to complete the chase in just 13.2 overs.
Earlier, India's disciplined bowling performance restricted Zimbabwe to 125/7. Mayank Yadav's early dismissals of Brian Bennett and Dion Myers were crucial, while Prince Yadav also took two wickets. Ravi Bishnoi and Shivam Dube each claimed one wicket. Tadiwanashe Marumani was the top scorer for Zimbabwe with an unbeaten 39, but India's bowlers effectively stifled the hosts' momentum.
