Shreyas Iyer Celebrates First T20I Century as India Triumphs Over West Indies
Iyer's Historic Performance Leads India to Victory
Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], October 6: Indian captain Shreyas Iyer expressed his joy after achieving his first T20I century during the opening match against the West Indies. He shared that he had been eager to reach this milestone and was ecstatic to finally accomplish it.
Thanks to Iyer's impressive century, India secured an 8-wicket victory over the West Indies in the first T20I held in Lucknow on Tuesday.
Reflecting on the win, Iyer noted that every victory feels unique and expressed his belief that India could emerge as one of the most formidable teams in T20 cricket if they maintain their current approach and determination.
“We adapted quickly and chose to bowl first, which was beneficial. Our focus was on the thrill of competing against the West Indies. I had been contemplating my first T20I century, and it finally happened. Winning feels special. I was the one to finish the match today. If we keep this mindset, we can become a highly destructive team,” Iyer stated post-match.
In pursuit of 172 runs, India completed the chase in just 14.4 overs, led by Iyer's remarkable unbeaten score of 102 off 43 balls, which included 10 fours and six sixes, achieving an impressive strike rate of 237.21.
This victory gives India an early lead in the five-match series and continues their strong performance following their gold medal win in the men's cricket event at the 2026 Asian Games. The West Indies will aim to regroup before the second T20I.
