Shreyanka Patil Out of Women's T20 World Cup; Prema Rawat Steps In
Shreyanka Patil's Injury Forces Replacement
In a significant setback for the Indian women's cricket team, off-spinner Shreyanka Patil has been sidelined from the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup due to an ankle injury. Uncapped leg-spinner Prema Rawat has been called up to take her place.
The 23-year-old Patil suffered the injury during India's impressive 95-run win against the Netherlands on Wednesday. The incident took place in the last over of the Powerplay when she twisted her ankle while trying to intercept the ball.
Immediately after the injury, Patil was seen gripping her right leg, prompting the team physiotherapist to rush onto the field. Unable to bear weight on her injured ankle, she was carried off on a stretcher after delivering just one ball.
According to a statement from the ICC, the Event Technical Committee for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has officially approved Prema Rawat as Patil's replacement in the Indian squad.
At 24, Rawat is set to make her debut for the senior national team. She has previously played six matches for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in two seasons of the Women’s Premier League.
Rawat was also part of the India A team that was scheduled to tour England for a six-match white-ball series, starting with the first T20 in Northampton this Saturday.
Her performance at the Rising Stars Women’s Asia Cup was noteworthy, where she took eight wickets at an impressive economy rate of 4.27, contributing to India A's title win.
This injury marks yet another unfortunate chapter in Patil's career, which has been marred by injuries in recent years. A broken finger in July 2024 had previously ruled her out of that year's T20 World Cup, and she has since dealt with shin splints in both legs and a stress reaction in her wrist, making this latest injury particularly disheartening.
