Shreyanka Patil Faces Injury Setback During Women's T20 World Cup Match
Injury Incident at Headingley
During India's Women's T20 World Cup clash against the Netherlands at Headingley, Leeds, all-rounder Shreyanka Patil sustained an ankle injury in an unusual incident. The injury occurred on the first ball of the sixth over of the Dutch innings. After bowling around the wicket, Shreyanka saw Phebe Molkenboer nudge the ball towards the leg side. As she rushed to prevent further runs following a half-stop by the midwicket fielder, she landed awkwardly while attempting to retrieve the ball. Her teammates quickly rushed to her aid as she fell to the ground in pain, clutching her right ankle. Medical staff arrived promptly to assess her condition, which appeared serious as she was unable to bear weight on her right leg. Ultimately, the 23-year-old was carted off the field, raising concerns about her participation in the remainder of the tournament. Shafali Verma stepped in to complete the over in Shreyanka's absence.
With crucial matches against South Africa and Australia on the horizon, the Indian team is now awaiting further medical evaluations, hoping for better news regarding Shreyanka's injury.
BCCI Provides Update on Shreyanka's Condition
BCCI's Statement On Shreyanka Patil
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a statement regarding Shreyanka's injury, saying, "Shreyanka Patil picked up an injury while attempting to field the ball and was stretchered off the field. We wish her a speedy recovery as we await further updates." This incident comes after Shreyanka had previously battled injuries for about 16 months, including a fractured finger during the Asia Cup. She made a comeback just in time to represent India in the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup in the UAE, but her return was short-lived due to a diagnosis of Grade 3 shin splints in both legs, sidelining her for several months. She also missed the entire 2025 Women's Premier League season with Royal Challengers Bengaluru due to these setbacks.
Earlier this year, Shreyanka made her return to international cricket during a T20I series against Australia, where she delivered a match-winning performance in the series finale at Adelaide Oval, earning the Player of the Match title.
In case Shreyanka is unable to recover in time, Radha Yadav, an experienced left-arm spinner, is poised to step in as her replacement. Following their match against the Netherlands, India will shift its focus to a crucial Group A encounter against South Africa, the 2024 runners-up, scheduled for June 20 at Old Trafford in Manchester.
