Shoaib Akhtar Backs Bangladesh's T20 World Cup Aspirations
Shoaib Akhtar Supports Bangladesh's T20 World Cup Journey
Dhaka [Bangladesh], December 16: Former Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has expressed his confidence in Bangladesh's prospects for the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. He believes that the team's developing pace attack could position them as a formidable contender on the international stage.
In his inaugural role within the T20 franchise circuit, Akhtar has taken on the mentorship of the Dhaka Capitals in the Bangladesh Premier League, aiming to cultivate the next generation of fast bowlers in the country.
Akhtar is optimistic that his extensive experience will enhance Bangladesh's pace bowling unit as they gear up for the tournament set to take place in India and Sri Lanka.
"I hope Bangladesh becomes a force in the upcoming World Cup," Akhtar stated. "I want them to be recognized as one of the strongest teams. This national squad is incredibly exciting, and I genuinely hope they advance far and potentially win the World Cup."
He has particularly focused on the emerging fast bowlers in Bangladesh, commending their progress over recent years. Akhtar specifically praised Taskin Ahmed, expressing a wish for him to break his long-standing speed record.
"I want Taskin to surpass my speed record," Akhtar remarked. "The pace attack is looking promising, and I truly hope they achieve great things in the World Cup."
Additionally, Akhtar provided technical guidance and mindset advice to Nahid Rana, Bangladesh's fastest bowler, emphasizing the significance of physical fitness and mental attitude.
"Fast bowling requires minimizing stress on the body," he elaborated. "If he (Rana) continues with effective training, I will share insights and techniques with him. If he embraces this, he can excel. However, the most crucial aspect is the attitude one holds towards life, which reflects on the field."
While eager to impart his knowledge, Akhtar acknowledged the contributions of Bangladesh's bowling coach, Shaun Tait, in fostering extreme pace.
"Shaun Tait is among the finest fast bowling coaches available," he noted. "He is an exceptional individual and one of the most sincere people you could work with."
Earlier this month, Bangladesh concluded their final T20I series of the year, securing a 2-1 victory against Ireland in a three-match series held at home.
In the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, Bangladesh has been placed in Group B alongside England, the West Indies, Nepal, and Italy, with their campaign kicking off against the West Indies on February 7 in Kolkata.
