Shimron Hetmyer Sets Record for Fastest Fifty in T20 World Cup History
Historic Performance by Shimron Hetmyer
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], February 23: In a remarkable display of power hitting, Shimron Hetmyer of the West Indies achieved the fastest fifty by a West Indies player in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup during a match against Zimbabwe at Wankhede Stadium on Monday. He reached his half-century in a mere 19 balls.
This achievement allowed Hetmyer to break his own previous record of a 22-ball fifty, which he set against Scotland earlier in the T20 World Cup 2026 at Eden Gardens.
Hetmyer was eventually dismissed in the 15th over after scoring a stunning 85 runs off just 34 balls, featuring seven sixes and seven fours. His performance tied him with Nicholas Pooran for the most sixes in a single T20 World Cup edition, with both players having hit 17 sixes.
After being asked to bat first, the West Indies lost Brandon King early on. Coming in at number three, Hetmyer wasted no time, hitting a boundary off the very first ball he faced from Richard Ngarava. In Ngarava's third over, Hetmyer struck three consecutive boundaries, setting the tone for his innings.
He launched two sixes off Graeme Cremer in the seventh over and then targeted the opposition captain, Sikandar Raza, hitting him for three sixes in one over, accumulating 20 runs in the eighth over.
Hetmyer continued his assault on Raza, scoring two more boundaries and another six in the 10th over before Cremer finally dismissed him in the 15th over, with a total of 86 runs from 34 balls.
Meanwhile, Rovman Powell also contributed significantly, scoring a rapid half-century off 29 balls. He ended his innings with 59 runs from 35 deliveries. Together, Hetmyer and Powell formed a formidable partnership, amassing 122 runs in just 52 balls, putting the West Indies in a commanding position in the match.
