On July 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Indian para-athlete Shilpa Kanchugarakoppalu Shyla for securing a bronze medal in the women's shot put F57 final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow.

In a post on X, PM Modi commended Shilpa's outstanding performance, emphasizing her personal best throw during the competition.

He expressed, "A brilliant performance by Shilpa Kanchugarakoppalu Shyla at the Commonwealth Games 2026! Congratulations to Shilpa for winning the Bronze Medal in the Women’s Shot Put F57 Final with a personal best throw. This is indeed a remarkable accomplishment."

Initially, Shilpa finished fourth with a personal best throw of 7.26 meters. However, she ascended to the podium after the disqualification of Nigerian athlete Iyiazi, as reported by ESPN. The updated results saw fellow Indian Sharmila Dhankar maintain her gold medal position with a season-best throw of 9.81m, while Ghana's Zinabu Issah secured silver with a throw of 8.65m.

This bronze medal represents a significant achievement for Shilpa, who has shown immense resilience throughout her journey. Hailing from Kanchigara Koppalu village in Mysuru district, she lost her left leg at the tender age of four due to a truck accident.

Despite this life-changing event, Shilpa pursued her education, earning a postgraduate degree and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.). She initially worked as a school teacher before transitioning to para-athletics.

Her throw of 7.26m in Glasgow initially placed her just outside the medal standings, but the official review and subsequent disqualification of an athlete allowed her to claim the bronze, marking India's first double podium finish in a single event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The women's shot put F57 event was led by Sharmila Dhankar, who continued her impressive streak by winning gold with a season-best throw of 9.81m, while Issah took home the silver for Ghana.
