Shaurya Bhattacharya Leads Kapil Dev Invitational with Impressive 66
Bhattacharya Takes Early Lead at Kapil Dev Invitational
Greater Noida (Uttar Pradesh) [India], October 7: Shaurya Bhattacharya kicked off the Vishwa Samudra presents Kapil Dev Invitational Tour Championship at the Jaypee Greens Golf and Spa Resort with a remarkable six-under 66, securing a two-shot lead after the opening round.
The 23-year-old golfer, who has triumphed three times on the DP World PGTI, achieved seven birdies throughout his round, with his only blemish occurring on the par-four eighth hole, as reported by Vishwa Samudra.
Starting the week ranked 14th in the Race to DP World India Championship, Bhattacharya has been close to clinching another title this season, having finished joint runner-up at both the DP World Players Championship 2026 in February and the Kolar Open 2026 in August.
Shubhankar Sharma from Chandigarh, a two-time DP World Tour champion, is in second place with a score of four-under 68. His round included an eagle on the par-five 12th hole, along with three birdies and a single bogey.
Shubhankar ended an eight-year title drought by winning the Boulders Classic on the DP World PGTI in April.
Sharing third place are Jamal Hossain from Bangladesh, Dhruv Sheoran from Gurugram, and Manoj S from Bengaluru, all with matching scores of two-under 70. Jamal recorded three birdies and one bogey, while Sheoran had six birdies but also four bogeys. Manoj's performance included five birdies and three bogeys.
Bhattacharya quickly established his rhythm with birdies on the first two holes, showcasing precise approach shots and strategic course management to keep his lead.
"I started strong with birdies on the first two holes, which helped me settle into the round," Bhattacharya commented. "I continued to find greens and remained patient. Although the lone bogey was disappointing, I made some crucial putts."
A long birdie putt on the final hole capped off his impressive 66, extending his lead to two strokes.
"The putt on the last felt like a bonus," he added. "I knew it would be a long day, so staying calm and focusing on one shot at a time was essential."
The tournament features a unique Pro-Am format, allowing amateurs to compete alongside professionals across all four rounds, with some players experiencing floodlit conditions during play.
"The format is intriguing as we play alongside amateurs, and the number of groups makes for a lengthy day," Bhattacharya noted. "Adjusting to floodlights is necessary, but my recent experience in similar conditions helped me adapt quickly."
"The conditions were uniform for everyone. I focused on hitting greens, creating opportunities, and maintaining a steady rhythm throughout the round."
Current leader of the Race to DP World India Championship, Saptak Talwar, began his round with a three-over 75, placing him in a tie for 36th.
The Tour Championship is backed by Presenting Partner Vishwa Samudra, a rapidly expanding global business conglomerate, and Powered by Partner NALCO, a leading aluminium company in India. Additional support comes from Event Partners APL Apollo Steel Pipes, Himalayan, and Powerade, along with Broadcast Partners Zee5 and Unite8 Sports.
