Shashank Singh's Focus on Finishing

Shashank Singh, who has maintained an impressive strike rate exceeding 155 in the previous two IPL seasons, prefers not to be labeled merely as a power hitter. Instead, the middle-order batsman for Punjab Kings aspires to establish himself as a reliable finisher. With an eye on the upcoming season, he is determined to make a significant impact, especially after facing a decline in his domestic performance due to recurring injuries.

Making his mark in 2024, Shashank scored 354 runs in 14 matches with a strike rate of 164.65 during his debut season with Punjab Kings. He followed this up with 350 runs in 17 matches at a strike rate of 153.51, including three half-centuries, which led the team management to retain him for the current season.

Reflecting on the previous year, Shashank stated, "It was crucial for me not to be seen as a one-season wonder. I performed well, but I was disappointed that my contributions didn’t lead to the team securing its first title. This year, I faced challenges in the domestic circuit due to injuries, but I am now fit and ready for the IPL."

The Punjab Kings have retained a similar roster to last season, which Shashank believes is beneficial.

He expressed, "I want to focus on finishing matches. Our team is eager to win the cup this year, and while being a power hitter is common in cricket today, I want to ensure I can close out tight games. Last season, I missed a few opportunities to finish close matches, and I aim to avoid that this time around." At 34, he will be supported by teammates like Prabhsimran Singh, Shreyas Iyer, Nehal Wadhera, and Marcus Stoinis in the batting lineup.

"In this team, failure is not an option, as everyone brings a wealth of experience. For example, during practice games when I struggled to score, our coach Ricky Ponting clearly outlined my role and approach, which boosted my confidence. The next two months are critical for us, and our focus is solely on winning the trophy," he concluded.
