Shai Hope Shines Again as West Indies Level T20I Series Against India
Hope's Stellar Performance in T20I Series
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], October 15: After leading his team to victory against India in the fourth T20I, West Indies captain Shai Hope reflected on his remarkable achievements during the tour, where he has consistently delivered award-winning performances.
Hope's impressive run continued as he notched his fourth century of the tour and his fifth score exceeding fifty in just seven innings. He has already secured three 'Player of the Match' awards. With the series tied at 2-2, the final match scheduled for October 17 in Bengaluru presents Hope with an opportunity to further enhance his accolades.
He humorously noted, “Honestly, those Player of the Match trophies are quite heavy; I might face some issues with luggage weight when heading home. My focus is on giving the team the best chance. Establishing a solid foundation at the start is crucial, and we managed a 50-plus opening partnership, which set the tone for our innings. This allowed us to express ourselves more freely in the middle overs and aim for a strong finish.”
Hope acknowledged that a score of 247 was respectable, mentioning that the pitch behaved differently than anticipated, with the new ball bouncing more than expected during their defense of 248 runs.
“I genuinely believed it was a decent score because the pitch was holding up more than we initially thought. We expected it to play better, but I noticed that some deliveries were bouncing significantly while others kept low. It was challenging to find the right pace, especially with spinners and quick bowlers coming in later,” he explained.
This year has been exceptional for the West Indies captain in T20Is, amassing 601 runs in 16 innings at an average of 50.08 and a strike rate exceeding 152, including two centuries and four fifties. In total, across all formats this year, he has scored 1,336 runs in 29 matches and 30 innings, averaging 55.66 with a strike rate of 92.01, featuring five centuries and seven fifties.
Hope is currently the top run-scorer for the West Indies and the second-highest in ODIs against India, with 278 runs in three innings at an impressive average of 139.00, including two centuries and a highest score of 162 not out in the final ODI in Assam. In the T20I segment, he has accumulated 261 runs in four innings, highlighted by two centuries and a fifty, making him the leading run-scorer in T20Is. Overall, he has scored 539 runs in seven innings at an average of 134.75, featuring four centuries and a fifty.
His record against India across all formats stands at 1,961 runs in 45 matches and 49 innings, averaging 47.82, with eight centuries and six fifties, and a top score of 162 not out.
With this victory, the series is now tied at 2-2, setting the stage for an exciting decider at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on October 17. Hope's remarkable innings of 102 not out off 50 balls, which included four boundaries and nine sixes, marked his fourth century of the tour, with Keemo contributing significantly with 5 wickets for 41 runs. Shimron Hetmyer (33 off 12 balls) and Sherfane Rutherford (49 not out off 26 balls) also played vital roles in reaching 247/3.
India, chasing the target, saw Sanju Samson score a quick 56 off 22 balls, but they struggled to keep up. A partnership of 70 runs between Tilak Varma (43 off 25 balls) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (41 off 20 balls) gave them hope, but their dismissals dimmed India's chances. Arshdeep Singh had to retire hurt in the final over after being struck on the arm, leaving India 25 runs short of the target.
