Shaheen Shah Afridi Returns Home Due to Knee Injury Ahead of T20 World Cup
Shaheen Shah Afridi's Injury Forces Early Departure from Brisbane Heat
New Delhi, December 30: The Brisbane Heat has announced that Pakistani fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi will be heading back to his home country due to a knee injury, as stated in an official release from the team.
Afridi sustained a cartilage injury in his knee while fielding during the Heat's thrilling victory over the Adelaide Strikers at the Gabba on Saturday night.
After discussions with the medical team of the Pakistan Cricket Board over the last day, it was decided that Afridi would end his Big Bash League (BBL) participation early to seek further treatment in preparation for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup.
Expressing his disappointment to his teammates, Afridi shared, "I have had a wonderful time playing for Brisbane, and I am saddened that I cannot complete the season with the team," as reported in the Brisbane Heat's release.
He continued, "I am incredibly grateful to the Heat fans for their overwhelming support and love. I also appreciate the team's hospitality and support throughout my time here," he added.
"The BBL has lived up to its reputation, showcasing a lot of skillful cricket. I have relished the challenge," he remarked.
Afridi concluded by saying, "I will be rooting for the team while I recover from this unexpected injury, and I hope to cross paths with them again in the future."
Brisbane Heat's CEO, Terry Svenson, expressed gratitude towards Afridi for his dedication to the team.
"Although his season did not conclude as he had hoped, he has shown professionalism, and we have been delighted to have him with us in Brisbane and at the Heat," Svenson stated.
He added, "Our young bowlers have greatly benefited from his insights and advice, which have positively influenced the team's overall performance."
Wishing Afridi a swift recovery, Svenson noted, "We wish him all the best as he prepares for the T20 World Cup."
This injury raises concerns for Pakistan as they gear up for the ICC T20 World Cup if Afridi is unable to recover in time.
Svenson mentioned that the club is exploring options to find a replacement for Afridi for the remainder of the tournament.
Acting captain Xavier Bartlett praised Afridi as an outstanding teammate.
"The discussions I had with Shaheen, along with the other bowlers regarding bowling strategies and match situations, have been invaluable. He integrated seamlessly into the squad, and it was a pleasure to play alongside him," he remarked.
