Shafali Verma Confident India Can Overcome Australia in T20 World Cup Clash
Shafali Verma's Optimism Ahead of Crucial Match
London [UK], June 27: Indian opener Shafali Verma is expressing her confidence in the Women in Blue's ability to triumph over Australia in their final league match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. While she acknowledges the prowess of the six-time champions, she also highlights India's previous victories against them.
Currently positioned second with three wins and one loss, India has accumulated six points. Their fate regarding a semifinal spot will be determined in the upcoming match against Australia at Lord’s on Sunday. South Africa, sitting in third with the same points, has a match against a weaker Bangladesh team, making it crucial for India to secure a decisive win.
In a pre-match discussion at JioStar’s ‘Match Centre Live’, Shafali reflected on India’s recent T20 series victory against Australia, where they won 2-1 earlier this year, stating that this success has bolstered their confidence.
“Australia is undoubtedly a world-class team, but we have proven we can beat them. Our recent T20 series win in Australia has given us a boost. We’ve faced them numerous times and understand their bowlers and strategies. It’s essential to keep things simple and trust our strengths. Overthinking can complicate matters,” she remarked.
Shafali has been performing well in the tournament, having scored two fifties, although she started with a disappointing six runs against Pakistan. She admitted to overthinking her approach initially but has since focused on simplifying her game.
“I’ve made significant improvements in my batting. After the Pakistan match, I realized I was overcomplicating things. Now, I focus on watching the ball and reacting rather than planning excessively. This change has allowed me to score more freely, and I aim to maintain this mindset in the crucial game against Australia,” she explained.
Throughout the tournament, Shafali has amassed 145 runs in four matches, averaging 36.25 with a strike rate exceeding 157.60, including a top score of 55. In 15 T20Is this year, she has scored 405 runs at an average of 27.00 and a strike rate above 148, featuring four fifties and a best score of 64.
She emphasized that she doesn’t force her shots if they aren’t working, instead focusing on rotating the strike and only playing aggressive shots when the ball is in her hitting zone.
“If my shots aren’t coming off, I don’t push them. I prefer to take singles and keep the scoreboard ticking. Batting should be straightforward: take singles, rotate the strike, and play along the ground when necessary. I only go for the big shots if the ball is in my hitting zone. Respecting good deliveries and looking for ones and twos is key. This approach has been my learning over time: stay calm, watch the ball, and react,” she concluded.
