Senegal's Coach Highlights Need for Improvement Despite 5-0 Victory Over Iraq
Senegal's Dominant Win and Future Prospects
Toronto, Canada - June 27: Following a commanding 5-0 victory against Iraq in their FIFA World Cup match, Senegal's coach Pape Bouna Thiaw emphasized that there is still room for enhancement, noting that the team's performance was not flawless despite the significant win.
This victory has bolstered Senegal's chances of advancing to the knockout stage, effectively eliminating Iraq's hopes of progressing further in the tournament.
Thiaw remarked, "Even with five goals scored, we still have areas to improve," while addressing the media.
As Senegal awaits the outcome of other matches to determine if they will qualify as one of the eight best third-placed teams, Thiaw expressed optimism, stating, "We have secured three points, and we hope for a favorable outcome for Senegal."
Senegal kicked off the match with a bang, scoring in the fourth minute when Abdoulaye Seck's header from a corner deflected off Habib Diarra, catching Iraq's goalkeeper Ahmed Basil off guard.
The situation worsened for Iraq when defender Rebin Sulaka received a straight red card for a foul on Sadio Mane, confirmed by VAR for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
Although Senegal couldn't capitalize on their numerical advantage in the first half, they finally broke through in the 56th minute when Lamine Camara assisted Ismaila Sarr, who easily found the net to make it 2-0.
Just three minutes later, substitute Pape Gueye made an immediate impact, scoring a stunning left-footed goal from outside the box.
Gueye added another goal in the 71st minute with a powerful long-range shot, and Iliman Ndiaye capped off the scoring in the 82nd minute, sealing a dominant performance.
This result places Senegal in a favorable position for qualification, with their goal difference likely to play a crucial role.
Thiaw commended Sadio Mane for his team spirit and defensive contributions, stating, "He brings great energy to the team and is very helpful defensively."
