Saudi Arabia Launches Dunes T20 League to Boost Cricket
Introduction to the Dunes T20 League
Saudi Arabia is making strides in the world of sports as part of its initiative to diversify its economy beyond oil dependency. The nation has unveiled its inaugural franchise cricket league, the Dunes T20 League, featuring a prominent Indian cricket icon. The league's first season is set to commence in October this year, with matches scheduled to be held in Taif, located near Jeddah. The South Asian Network (SAN) has been entrusted with organizing the league by the Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation (SACF) since October 2026. SAN has formed a strategic alliance with Unique Sports Group and Prolithic Talent Agency.
“South Asian Network Limited has announced a strategic collaboration with Unique Sports Group and Prolithic Talent Agency, a sports management and investment firm guided by cricket legend Yuvraj Singh, to launch the Dunes T20 League in Saudi Arabia in October 2026. This partnership follows SAN Ltd being granted the rights by the Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation in October 2025 to create and manage the Kingdom’s first professional T20 cricket league,” stated the organizers.
The league, comprising six teams, is expected to kick off in the second week of October 2026, marking a pivotal moment for cricket development in Saudi Arabia. The Dunes T20 League aims to foster the sport's growth in the region, offering opportunities for both emerging and established local talents while delivering a premier sporting and entertainment experience to global audiences, with cricket legends anticipated to participate.
“This partnership merges SAN Ltd’s commercial and operational know-how with Unique Sports Group’s international sports and talent management expertise, alongside Prolithic Talent Agency’s focus on athlete representation, brand development, and sports investment. With Yuvraj Singh serving as the League Ambassador, the Dunes T20 League will leverage his extensive experience in international cricket and his vast global fan base,” they added.
Saudi Arabia's Expanding Sports Landscape
Saudi Arabia's Sporting Growth
In recent years, Saudi Arabia's Saudi Pro League has invested heavily to attract top football talent globally, including Cristiano Ronaldo, who currently plays for Al Nassr. Other notable players like Neymar, Karim Benzema, and N'Golo Kante have also graced the league, creating a significant shift in the sports landscape, as elite players typically align with leading European clubs. Additionally, the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) initiated the LIV Golf Tour to compete with the PGA Tour, although they recently announced plans to withdraw funding after the current season.
Moreover, Saudi Arabia has made substantial investments in cricket through various sponsorships. The state-owned oil giant Aramco became the inaugural sponsor of the orange and purple caps during the 2022 season and is a premier partner of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Furthermore, Jeddah hosted the IPL Mega Auction in 2025, showcasing the Kingdom's growing involvement in cricket.
