Clarifying His Comments on Team India's Reception

On May 8, in New Delhi, prominent Indian doubles badminton player Satwiksairaj Rankireddy addressed the controversy surrounding his comments about the lack of fanfare following Team India's bronze medal win at the Thomas Cup. He emphasized that his statements were not motivated by a desire for personal recognition or to undermine the achievements of others. Instead, he aims to promote a culture that acknowledges and celebrates every victory, regardless of its size.

India faced a 3-0 defeat against France in the semifinals of the Thomas Cup 2026 held in Horsens, Denmark, which concluded their hopes of reclaiming the title they had won in 2022. Upon returning home, the Indian team did not receive a warm welcome from fans. Satwiksairaj expressed his disappointment on Instagram, stating, "Back home now. As usual, no one knows what happened over the past two weeks, and it seems like no one really cares." His doubles partner, Chirag Shetty, shared this sentiment.

During a press conference, Chirag remarked that India is not yet recognized as a sporting nation and does not adequately celebrate its athletes. He highlighted the general lack of awareness among fans regarding the significance of India's Thomas Cup victory in 2022. These comments sparked backlash from some sports enthusiasts, leading to trolling directed at the athletes.

In response to the uproar, Satwiksairaj clarified his intent, stating, "The last few days have brought a lot of attention to my recent comments regarding the lack of a reception for our Thomas Cup bronze medal. While I am grateful for the overwhelming support and encouragement, I want to clarify my intent because I see many people deviating from the original point."

He further stated, "My words did not come from a place of wanting personal fame or taking credit away from anyone else's achievements. I have the utmost respect for every athlete who brings glory to India, regardless of the sport. My message was simple: we need to foster a culture that encourages and celebrates every win, big or small. Whether it is a World Cup medal or a podium finish in a global championship like the Thomas Cup, these moments represent years of sacrifice and hard work."

Satwiksairaj expressed that when such accomplishments are met with indifference, it is disheartening not only for the athletes but also for future generations of Indian sportspeople. He concluded by saying, "We do not want money or grand parades; we just want to know that our country is watching and that our efforts are seen. Let us come together to support all sports with the same passion and angle. Next time, let it not be about who won more or less, but about celebrating everyone who wears the India jersey. Thank you for standing by me. Let's keep playing for India."
