Sarvesh Kushare Makes History with Silver Medal in Men's High Jump at Commonwealth Games

Historic Achievement for Indian Athletics

Glasgow, Scotland - On July 28, Sarvesh Kushare made headlines by securing India's inaugural silver medal in the men's high jump at the Commonwealth Games. He dedicated this remarkable achievement to his family and the nation, expressing optimism about the potential for more medals for Indian athletics in Glasgow. Sarvesh is now setting his sights on winning gold at the upcoming Asian Games.

In an interview following his performance, Sarvesh remarked, "The competitions for the rest of the Indian athletics team are still to come, so we hope to see as many gold medals as possible. Although I didn't clinch gold, I am proud of my silver. My focus now shifts to the Asian Games, where I aim for gold. It was within my grasp; had I cleared 2.28m today, I would have won gold. But I remain hopeful for future opportunities. I dedicate this medal to my family and my country."

Sarvesh made history as the first Indian athlete to win a silver medal in this event at the Commonwealth Games, clearing a height of 2.25 meters in the final. He narrowly missed out on gold after failing to clear 2.28m in three attempts. Jamaica's Romaine Beckford also cleared 2.25m but secured the gold on countback due to a cleaner series of jumps, while England's Kimani Jack took home the bronze with a best jump of 2.20m.

The pivotal moment came at the 2.25m mark, where Sarvesh succeeded on his third attempt. Beckford, however, cleared the height on his first attempt, giving him the edge that ultimately determined the gold medal.

Entering the Commonwealth Games with impressive form, Sarvesh had recently set a new Indian national record of 2.31m at the National Inter-State Championships just a month prior. He carried this momentum into Glasgow, confidently navigating the early heights before securing his podium finish with a clearance of 2.25m.

In contrast, India's other competitors in the men's high jump had varied results, with Aadarsh Ram finishing fifth, while 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Tejaswin Shankar withdrew after his initial jump.

Sarvesh's silver medal marked India's fifth silver and tenth overall medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, where the country has thus far achieved two gold, five silver, and three bronze medals.

Earlier, Sharmila Dhankar contributed to India's medal tally by winning the women's shot put F57 event with a season-best throw of 9.81m, while fellow Indian Shilpa Shyla was awarded bronze following the disqualification of Nigeria's Eucharia Iyiazi.
