Sarfaraz Ahmed Announces Retirement from International Cricket
Sarfaraz Ahmed Bids Farewell to International Cricket
On March 15, former captain of the Pakistan cricket team, Sarfaraz Ahmed, declared his retirement from international cricket. The wicketkeeper-batsman had not participated in international matches for the past two years, with his last Test appearance occurring in 2023 and his final white-ball match in 2021. In his retirement statement, Sarfaraz expressed, "Representing Pakistan has been the greatest honor of my life. From leading the U19 team to a world championship in 2006 to winning the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017, every moment in the national colors has been memorable. I am thankful to my teammates, coaches, family, and fans for their constant support throughout my journey." He added, "Captaining Pakistan in all formats was a dream realized. I aimed to play fearless cricket and foster a united team. Witnessing players like Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Shadab Khan evolve into match-winners during my captaincy stands as one of my proudest accomplishments. I appreciate the Pakistan Cricket Board for their trust in me over the years. Pakistan cricket holds a special place in my heart, and I will continue to support the sport in every way possible."
Sarfaraz made his domestic cricket debut in 2006 and played his first ODI against India in November 2007 in Jaipur. He made his Test and T20I debuts in early 2010. Over his Test career, he accumulated 3,031 runs, while in ODIs, he scored 2,315 runs and achieved 818 runs in 42 T20I innings. He made history by leading Pakistan to victory in the 2017 Champions Trophy, defeating India in the final.
However, his decline began following the ICC event in England, as he became less frequent in the team after Pakistan's disappointing performance in the 2019 World Cup, playing only three ODIs post-tournament. Sarfaraz also found success in junior cricket, leading Pakistan to victory in the 2006 U19 World Cup, where they triumphed over India in the final. Notably, players like Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja, and Piyush Chawla were part of that squad. There are indications that Sarfaraz may soon be appointed as Pakistan's head coach, having recently joined the selection committee alongside Misbah-ul-Haq.
