Sanju Samson's Struggles Continue as India Prepares for England Tour
Samson's Performance Under Scrutiny
In the recent T20 series against Ireland, the Indian cricket team management opted not to give Vaibhav Sooryavanshi his debut, leaving him on the bench for both matches. Instead, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, who were pivotal in securing India's victory at the 2026 T20 World Cup, opened the innings. Unfortunately, Samson struggled, failing to score in both games and getting out on the very first ball in one match. Abhishek, however, started the series strong with a quickfire 50 off 20 balls but also went scoreless in the second T20I.
Following the series, cricket analyst Aakash Chopra expressed concerns about Samson's position in the team. He noted, "Sanju got out on the first ball. Now I am getting a little worried about Sanju because he is the first player on whom the wrath falls. If someone has to go out, the first man on the chopping block is Sanju. So I was secretly hoping he would score runs, and definitely in the second match once he got out in the first," during a discussion on his YouTube channel.
Samson had previously been a standout performer in the 2026 T20 World Cup, contributing significantly with three match-winning innings. He scored an impressive 97 off 50 balls against the West Indies in the Super 8 stage and followed it up with another stellar performance, hitting 89 off 42 balls in the semi-final against England. In the final, he again showcased his talent with a score of 89 off just 46 balls.
Despite his recent struggles, it seems the team management is willing to give Samson some time to find his form before making any decisions regarding his place in the lineup. Meanwhile, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's wait for his first cap continues, but he may have the opportunity to play in the upcoming series against England.
Upcoming Series Against England
India is set to tour England for a series comprising 5 T20Is and 3 ODIs from July 1 to July 17. The series will commence with T20 matches before transitioning to ODIs, with Shreyas Iyer at the helm as captain of the Men in Blue.
