Samson's Game-Changing Abilities

According to India's head coach Gautam Gambhir, Sanju Samson has the capability to dominate the game right from the Powerplay when he is at his peak performance.

During the crucial stages of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Samson played pivotal roles, delivering explosive half-centuries in both the semifinal and final, which were instrumental in securing India's third title.

In the final against New Zealand, he, along with Abhishek Sharma, set the tone by scoring 92 runs during the Powerplay.

"We are all aware of Sanju's potential; there has never been any question regarding his talent and explosiveness. If he gets into his rhythm, he can clinch the game within the first six overs," Gambhir stated on Jio Star.

Samson's Journey to the Playing XI

Despite not being included in the initial playing XI due to a lackluster performance in the lead-up series against New Zealand, Samson seized his opportunity in a must-win match against Zimbabwe, scoring a quick 24 runs off just 15 balls. In his last three matches, he accumulated scores of 97 not out, 89, and 89.

"I mentioned it to him while we were both training in the gym. I casually told him he would be playing against Zimbabwe, and he responded, 'let it come.' Our conversations are more relaxed, resembling a friendship rather than a typical coach-player dynamic," Gambhir shared.

Strategic Decisions Behind Team Composition

With Samson absent, India's top order featured three left-handed batsmen: Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma, and Tilak Varma. However, Gambhir clarified that the decision to include Samson was not merely to alter the left-handed combination but to enhance the team's explosiveness.

"Many might speculate that we aimed to break the trio of left-handers, but that was not the case. Our goal was to amplify our explosiveness, as our strategy over the past year and a half has been to play aggressively," he explained.

"The rationale for bringing in Sanju was not about countering the off-spinner but rather to increase our firepower at the top and adopt a more aggressive approach during the initial overs."

Abhishek Sharma's Resilience

Abhishek faced a challenging start to the tournament, recording three ducks, but he rebounded with two half-centuries, including one in the final.

"I experienced something similar in 2014 during the IPL, where I had three consecutive ducks followed by another in the fourth match. I advised him that while people may scrutinize his scores, it doesn't mean he is out of form; he simply hasn't scored yet," Gambhir noted.

"You can only assess your form after facing 20 to 30 balls, and he hasn't even reached that mark. My only advice was for him to be even more aggressive in the next game than he was previously.

"There was never any doubt about Abhishek's capabilities. We have always had faith in every player selected to represent the country in the T20 World Cup."
