Sanju Samson Shines with 89 Runs in T20 World Cup Semifinal Victory
Samson's Stellar Performance Leads India to Victory
Mumbai (Maharashtra), March 6: Following India's thrilling win against England in the T20 World Cup semifinal, opener Sanju Samson showcased his talent with an impressive 89 runs off just 42 balls. This performance came on the heels of his unbeaten 97 against West Indies in Kolkata. Samson reflected on his journey through self-doubt after being moved down the batting order, struggling with form, and ultimately being dropped from the squad. He expressed that winning the title would bring him a sense of relief.
Samson's explosive innings, which included eight fours and seven sixes, propelled India to a total of 253/7. Despite a valiant century from Jacob Bethell (105 runs off 48 balls), England fell short by seven runs.
These remarkable performances followed a challenging period for Samson, who had been relegated in favor of vice-captain Shubman Gill during the Asia Cup and faced limited opportunities. After Gill's exclusion from the T20 World Cup squad, Samson returned as an opener but struggled in a home series against New Zealand, scoring only 46 runs in five innings. This led to Ishan Kishan stepping in as the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter after his successful stint leading Jharkhand to their first Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy victory.
Samson's recent knocks came after he had faced criticism for not converting promising starts into significant scores. However, he has now marked a pivotal moment in his career, achieving three T20I centuries in just five innings since being reinstated as an opener.
In the post-match press conference, Samson remarked that all his hard work, patience, and training were worthwhile. He stated, "It feels really great and relieved that I have been trying for a few years to achieve something like this for my country. I believe we have one more step to go, and if we achieve that, all the effort will be justified." He emphasized the importance of timing and decision-making in his performance.
Reflecting on his demotion in the batting order and subsequent struggles, Samson acknowledged the difficulties he faced during the New Zealand series, admitting he had tried too hard. To regain his form, he focused on respecting the game and honing his fundamentals, which ultimately paid off. He also credited his mental clarity to stepping away from social media and minimizing distractions.
Samson expressed his desire to leverage his extensive T20 experience to support the team in various situations, particularly during high-pressure moments in matches. He noted that while missing out on centuries was disappointing, he remained grateful for his contributions.
"When I feel good, I aim to provide a strong start for my team. The powerplay is crucial, and I try to capitalize on those early opportunities. The top order's role is to attack, but we must also adapt our strategy based on the match situation," he explained.
He concluded by stating, "One more match, and I will feel very light." In the match, India set a formidable target of 253 runs, thanks to Samson's explosive innings and contributions from Shivam Dube (43 runs off 25 balls), Ishan Kishan (39 runs off 18 balls), Hardik Pandya (27 runs off 12 balls), and Tilak Varma (21 runs off 7 balls).
Despite having England in a tough spot at 95/4, they fought back with a strong partnership between Bethell and Will Jacks (35 runs off 20 balls), who added 77 runs for the fifth wicket. Bethell's efforts, along with a quick cameo from Jofra Archer, brought England close, but they ultimately finished at 246/7.
